Just Wasn’t Big Enough: The Big Apple Circus Is Folding Up After Nearly 40 Years

    • Description

      Remember the Big Apple Circus?

Remember the cool trapeze acts that you oohed and aahed at as a kid because you were convinced the acrobats were flying?

Remember the only semi-creepy clowns that rolled around on balls, always a little too close to falling and really good at not?

Well, store them in your memory for now, because the Big Apple Circus is folding up.

As a non-profit organization, the circus relies on donations for upkeep. According to The New York Times, of the $2 million they needed to keep their tent up, their fundraising campaign only managed to raise $900,000.

So, unfortunately, there will be no circus this season, but the circus is hoping for a comeback soon.

Some good news though? The circus will not stop spreading smiles.

The organization sent out a tweet announcing that they will continue their community programs, which include Clown Care, a project that sends circus performers to bring cheer to sick children and their families in hospitals. They currently bring Clown Care to 16 of the leading pediatric hospitals nationwide.

They will also continue offering “Circus to Go,” which is exactly what it sounds like. They bring the circus to parties and events, providing clowns, aerialists, acrobats, and other performers (though, it’s pretty doubtful they’ll bring the lions. Then again, this is the circus, so who knows?).
