    Japanese performance art Butoh in New York Theatre

      Butoh Institute in New York presents Festival 19, from October 17 up to October 27, 2019 at Theatre for the New City. 

      Year 2019 is a 60th anniversary of the performance art born in Japan and called "Butoh". Festival will rpesent amazing program of various Butoh masterclasses and workshops, also performances at Theatre for the New City for the whole duration of the festival. 

      On October 27, lecture and a short film about Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of butoh art form will be presented. Also 60 years of this historical art form and how it continues to evolve into the 21st century. During the festival, butoh performances will be played, with 14 dancers from Japan, Italy, Norway, Colombia, Germany, France and from USA. Vangeline, the institute's founder will perform piece called "Hijikata, Mon Amour" this is an homage to the Tatsumi Hijikata, the butoh founder. Replica of the legendary bold red costume for butoh performance created by Tatsumi Hijikata and The Japanese revolt in 1968.

      Festival is able to showcase replica of the costume worn by founder thanks to the loan from the Archives of Tatsumi and a Janet Arnold Award (Society of Antiquaries of London). This costume is very important for the art form of Butoh. 

      Festival will be closed with short movie of Tatsumi Hijikata's  solo performance.

      Festival will take place at Theatre for the New City at: 155 First Avenue, NYC 

      Thurs. - Sat. (October 17-19 and October 24-26 : 8pm,

      Sun. October 20th:  3pm,

      Sun. October 27th - special event lecture: 3pm. (free admission).
