Circus boasts new additions to make it Greatest Show on – and off – Earth

    • Description

CHICAGO -- It is the 146th edition of the Greatest Show on Earth and for the first time ever Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus is hitting the ice.

“Out of this World” is the new production which just blasted off for a four year tour.

On top of the traditional circus animals, high flying acts and wild performances, the show and its costumes are high tech.

Dawna Oak is the senior director of costumes for Feld Entertainment and is heading up the eight person crew which keeps the more than one thousand costume pieces, 800 pieces of footwear and million-plus rhinestones sparkling securely during each performance.

“I think the costumes are definitely one of the shining elements of the sparkle literally and figuratively it’s what really informs the theme of the show,” she says. “It’s circus couture.”

Water, fire, ice and satin are major themes in the new show brightly depicted in the costume changes – including hair and makeup – performers go through.

It’s a labor of love depicted in the intricate costuming as well as the advanced technology which is launching the historic show into a whole other world.
