Jane Krakowski on keeping fit — and doing splits — at 47

    • Description

Jane Krakowski gets quite the workout -- with a helping hand from Gavin Creel -- in the Roundabout Theatre show "She Loves Me."

And, once again, Krakowski’s bringing down the house, this time when she falls into a split and, legs akimbo, gets dragged across the stage by her boyfriend.

So, yes, she’s up for another Tony. She’s also 47. How is that split even possible?

Krakowski laughs. “Isn’t that something everyone does?” she says of Ilona’s legs-wide-open moment, which the actress calls “the ultimate surrender.” Sipping a grapefruit-flavored Perrier between shows the other day, she says she’s always been “quite bendy.”

It helps that she started dancing as a child in New Jersey, where her mother had a dance studio. Krakowski says she’s always preferred “exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise” — group activities like SoulCycle and Barry’s Bootcamp. Even so, the show’s choreographer suggested she take classes at Modo Yoga to stay limber.

“I love it!” Krakowski says. “It’s not Bikram, but it’s hot and you sweat like crazy.”

And then there are her other workouts: bicycling with her son, Bennett, to and from his school; playing eight shows a week — and hiking up to her dressing room on Studio 54’s fifth floor.

“That’s why I picked it,” she says.

Even her friends have noticed how trim and toned she is.

“I saw [‘Schmidt’ co-star] Tituss Burgess the other day, and he didn’t even say hello,” she says. “He started with, ‘Oh, at our Broadway weight, are we?’”

Except for a tub of Swedish Fish in her dressing room, Krakowski says she “eats clean” when she’s working — which for her means very little sugar and alcohol and lots of fish and vegetables. “What did Jenna say?” she asks, channeling her “30 Rock” character: “Just water, fresh air and exercise!”

Since becoming a mother five years ago, she says she’s lowered her heel height for the daytime by three inches: Her mantra is “flats for day, heels for play.” (The exception? The 5-inch-high black stilettos lolling under a vanity, which she wore to that day’s awards luncheon.)

But while she swears by two products, Dior’s “Diorshow” mascara and Charlotte Tilbury “Charlotte’s Magic Cream” moisturizer, Krakowski says her secret weapon is a photo on her cellphone.

It shows Liliane Montevecchi, with whom she starred in 1989’s “Grand Hotel,” warming up for a cabaret show, one shapely leg raised high in the air.

That photo was taken last year, when Montevecchi was 83.

“Since the day I met her, she told me she never drank water, only Champagne,” says Krakowski, who’s yet to finish the box of bubbly someone gave her on opening night, in March. “If that’s true, she’s my hero!”
